SENATE DOCUMENT #32 APC Document #27 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog revisions for the Department of Sociology: DELETE: First paragraph on page 150. Substitute paragraph below. ADD: The major in sociology includes 34 semester hours of work in courses offered by the department. The 34 hours are to include Sociology 100, 210, 225, 355, 356, 442, 450, and 451. Sociology 442, 450, and 451 should be taken during the senior year. The student is asked to choose one of three programs which are dscribed below to complete the 34 hours. The senior demonstration of competency can be indicated by the successful completion of Sociology 451. DELETE: Third paragraph on page 150. Substitute paragraph below. ADD: The Department does not require its majors to take a foreign language. However, for those students planning to attend graduate school, it is recommended that they complete work in a foreign language at the intermediate level. DELETE: Sociology 355 title and description. ADD: Sociology 355 Research Methods I (3) An introduction to the basic methodology used in sociology. An examination of the important aspects of sociological research including the origins of the scientific method, the structuring of social scientific inquiry and modes of sociological observation. Prerequisite: Sociology 100. ADD: Sociology 356 Research Methods II (3) A consideration of the more advanced procedures and methods of examining sociological concepts with an emphasis on quantitative and qualitative data analysis and the writing of research reports. Students will design, conduct, and analyze their own quantitative and qualitative sociological research projects. Prerequisite: Sociology 355. RATIONALE: The expansion of research methods (Soc 355) into a two term sequence allows for the integration of statistical procedures into the design formats of sociologial methods. The appropriateness of parametric and non-parametric statistical analysis can be introduced coterminously with particular sociological research strategies. (Passed Faculty Senate April 6, 1979)
