SENATE DOCUMENT #22 APC Document #14 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Drama: CATALOG REVISIONS: pg. 92 Drama 110 Introduction to Acting Delete the sentence in the description reading: "An audition is required for admission to the course." Change the final sentence of the course description to read: "Prerequisite: permission of the instructor." Drama 211 Intermediate Acting Change credits from (2) to (3). pg. 93 Delete: Advanced Acting (4) and existing description. Add: Advanced Acting (3) A survey of acting techniques for period and nonrealistic drama, with emphasis on intensive scene study. Prerequisite: Drama 110, 211, Speech 105, Literature 331. Add: In the program description, after the sentence "Speech 101, 105, 115, and 320 may be counted toward the major requirements" add this sentence: "Students taking Drama 211, Intermediate Acting, and Drama 312, Advanced Acting, should elect Physical Education 137, Modern Dance, and Physical Education 100, Stunts and Tumbling, as part of their all-University requirements. Rationale: The changes in the acting sequence are minor modifications intended to make these courses more accessible to non-drama majors and to gain a more even distribution of credit and contact hours between Intermediate and Advanced Acting. The stage movement laboratory previously asociated with Advanced Acting has to be dropped because we cannot be sure that the specialized personnel or the funds to employ them will be available. pg. 92 Drama 231 Elements of Production (4) Delete: Existing description. Add: Numeral "I" after title. Add: Description: Introductory survey of the organization of theatre production, focusing on the practical translation of the play script's visual requirements into scenery and costumes. Two lectures and seven laboratory hours per week, plus required work on productions of the University Theatre. pg. 93 Delete: Drama 232 Technical Theatre Laboratory (4) and existing description. Add: Drama 232 Elements of Production II A continuation of Drama 231 focusing on the specific technical fields of scenic design, lighting, audio systems, and properties production. Two lectures and seven laboratory hours per week, plus required work on productions of the University Theatre. Prerequisite: Drama 231. Delete: Drama 334 Stagecraft (3) and existing course description. Add: Drama 334 Structural Design for the Stage Theory of scenery construction, rigging, stage machinery. Analysis of mechanical forces and geometric developments through graphic solutions to problems, including scenic drafting of plans, elevations, and working drawings. Prerequisite: Drama 231-232 or permission of the instructor. pg. 94 Drama 435 Scene Design (3) Delete: Existing prerequisite statement at end of description. Add: Prerequisites: Drama 241-242, 334, Literature 331, or permission of the instructor. Drama 437 Lighting Design (3) Delete: Existing prerequisite statement. Add: Prerequisites: Drama 241-242, 336, Literature 331, or permission of the instructor. Rationale: The changes in Drama 231-232 are intended to distribute a large quantity of material relating to all aspects of technical theatre production more evenly over two courses, rather than attempting to introduce all topics within one course. The change of title of Drama 334 from Stagecraft to Structural Design for the Stage is intended to more accurately reflect the content of the course. The additional prerequisites for Drama 435 and 437 are intended to ensure the student will have a basic grounding in the history and literature of the theatre before attempting courses in design. pg. 120 Add: In the course description for the Literature-Drama joint major, change the sentence reading "The major consists of 35 hours . . ." to read "The major consists of 36 hours . . ." Delete: The final sentence of the description beginning "Course requirements in drama . . ." Add: Add this sentence: "Course reqirements in drama: Drama 231, 232, 241 or 242, 110. Rationale: The changes in course requirements for the literature-drama major reflect the revised sequence of technical theatre courses, Drama 231-232, shown above. pg. 167 Delete: Drama 105 Introduction to the Theatre Rationale: This course was offered during the summer in conjunction with the Asheville Youth Theatre, a cooperative program between Theatre UNC-Asheville and the Asheville Community Theatre. Because of other summer commitments by the drama faculty, this program has been terminated. (Passed Faculty Senate February 9, 1979)
