SENATE DOCUMENT #18 APC Document #10 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Biology: CATALOG REVISION: Delete: Course description under Biology 131 and 132, page 83. Substitute: 131 Introductory Biology I (3) An introduction to major unifying principles of the life sciences. Emphasis is placed on the nature of life, cellular and organismic biology, genetics, and ecology. The course also surveys adaptive diversity of living organisms and covers aspects of growth, development, and evolutionary modification. 132 Introductory Biology II (3) A continuation of Biology 131. Prerequisite: Biology 131. Rationale: The present catalog listing is too restrictive; as presently worded it implies that genetics and ecology can be emphasized in Biology 132 only. We want to have the flexibility of a more general description. Delete: Biology 441 title and description, page 85. Substitute: 441 Research in Biology (1) Individual research for students of senior standing. A written research paper, which serves as the demonstration of competency, is required of each degree candidate in biology. Research projects must be approved by the departmental staff. Rationale: The revised description and changed title more accurately reflect the intention of the course: preparing and presenting the senior research paper. This paper may be presented orally in a seminar setting, but the course is not used for regular meetings to discuss current research topics or to review the literature as suggested by the present title and description. (Passed Faculty Senate January 25, 1979)
