y7879 / sd0778 SENATE DOCUMENT #7 Executive Committee Document #1 The Executive Committee recommends the following policy with respect to the conduct of elections to committees: It is the established policy of the faculty that, with certain recognized exceptions,* all faculty members eligible for elections to committees will be listed on the respective ballots. Individuals elected to committees have the right to resign their positions for professional or personal reasons. The individual should send a letter of resignation stating the reasons for such action to the Chairman of the Faculty Senate. If a member of an elected committee resigns, the position will be filled by the faculty member with the next highest vote total as determined by the ballot which elected the resigned committee member. Order of rank for elected committees is determined by the document regulating tenure, promotion, and reappointment decisions. In the event of a tie vote for a committee position, the normal procedure will be to conduct a run-off election between those individuals who are tied. If one or more individuals involved in the tie wish not to stand for election in a run-off, he or she should notify the Chairman of the Faculty Senate with a brief, written statement of the reasons. If such a withdraw breaks the tie, the run-off election need not be held. ______________________ *As stipulated in the Faculty Senate Constitution and as pursuant to the recognized practice of allowing anyone to withdraw his or her name from the ballot for the Consolidated University Faculty Assembly. RATIONALE: To date, with the exception of the Faculty Senate Constitution and the accepted practice followed with respect to the ballot to the Consolidated University Faculty Assembly, there is no stated policy for such matters.
