Senate Document #12 APC Document #10 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following change in the grading system: The University of North Carolina at Asheville uses a quality point average system and semester hours credit for calculating student achievement. Grading symbols used are A-excellent (4 quality points), B-good (3 quality points), C-average (2 quality points), D-passing (1 quality point), F-failure (0 quality points), U- unsatisfactory (0 quality points). T-audit, W-withdrawal, I- incomplete, and S-satisfactory, carry no quality points and are not included in the calculation of the quality point average. (Those courses for which the faculty has approved a pass/fail (S/U) grading system have been indicated in the catalog course descriptions.) The grade point average is determined by dividing the accumulated number of quality points earned by the accumulated number of semester hours attempted. In calculating a grade point average, the numbers will be truncated at the end of the second decimal. An instructor may, at his discretion, give an incomplete grade (I) to a student who has not completed the requirements for the course. Concomitantly with the recording of an I grade, the instructor files with the Registrar a statement of the student's average grade and specific work which must be accomplished before the I is removed. An incomplete grade must be removed not later than one week before the last day of the next succeeding term (excluding summer terms); if it is not so removed, the Registrar is directed, by faculty action, to automatically record a grade of F. Extensions of incomplete grades may be granted only in highly unusual circumstances and then only at the discretion of the instructor and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, in consultation with the Academic Policies Committee. The "W" grade is used for a withdrawal from a course up to one week after the mid-point of the term or semester. Withdrawal from a course after that point will result in a grade of "F." Upon recommendation of the instructor, extenuating circumstances may be considered by the Academic Policies Committee. Auditors do not receive credit. Students who are registered for a course for credit may change their status to audit up until one week past the mid-point of the term or semester. Honor Roll - At the end of each semester, degree students who are carrying a full-time load of 12 semester hours will be included in a published "Dean's List" providing they have no grade lower than a "C" and providing the quality point average of all their grades for that semester is 3.5 or better. Satisfactory Progress and Academic Eligibility - UNC-A has established a minimum standard of satisfactory progress and a minimum grade point average which must be met by students wishing to continue their studies at UNC-A. Failure to meet these standards results in suspension. A grade point average will not be computed on or required for work attempted at UNC-A prior to the fall of 1978. A student who registers for 12 or more semester hours must pass a minimum of 6 semester hours of work. A student who registers for less than 12 semester hours must pass at least half of the work. A student who fails to meet these minimum hour requirements will be placed on academic probation for the following semester. During the semester in which the student is on probation he must pass 6 semester hours of work if he is registered for 12 or more hours; or if a part-time student, he must pass half of his work. Failure to do this will result in suspension for a semester. Additionally, students must have the following grade point average in order to continue to study at UNC-A: For students entering UNC-A for the first time on or after 8-21-78: Attempted Minimum Grade Point Average 29 or fewer 1.3 30-59 1.5 60-89 1.75 90 or more 1.9 120 required to graduate 2. A student whose grade point average at the end of any semester is below the minimum will be placed on academic probation for the following semester. If, at the end of that semester, his average is still below the minimum he will be suspended for one semester. An exception to the minimum grade point average is made in that no student will be suspended at the end of a regular semester in which his semester grade point average was at least a 2.2 on a minimum of 12 semester hours of work. A grade point average of 2. on work completed during the 1978 Fall Semester and after is required for graduation. Any student who is suspended at the end of the spring semester may attend summer school at UNC-A. If he passes half of the hours for which he is registered in summer school and his overall grade point average at the end of the summer term is at the acceptable minimum, he will be permitted to continue for the fall semester. The probation and suspension regulations apply to all classifications of students. Where there are extenuating circumstances a student may petition the Admissions Committee for a waiver of suspension regulations. Student Responsibility -- Each student is expected to be aware at all times of his academic status and to be responsible for knowing whether or not he is on academic probation. Every student is responsible for the p roper completion of his academic program, for familiarity with the University Catalog, for maintaining the grade average required, and for meeting all other degree requirements, including attendance at the commencement exercises at which he will receive his diploma. His adviser will counsel him, but the final responsibility remains that of the student. A student is required to know knowledge of and observe all regulations pertaining to campus life and student deportment. He is responsible for maintaining communication with the University, by keeping on file with the Registrar's Office at all times his current address, including ZIP Code, and telephone number. Every student, while he is associated with the University, is expected to comport himself in campus and community life in a manner that will reflect credit upon himself and the University. (Passed by Faculty Senate March 13, 1978; revision passed March 31, 1978.)
