Senate Document #9 APC Document #8 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Education: CHANGE: Education 334, The Teaching of Language Arts, Education 344, Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary Schools, Education 368, The Teaching of Reading in the Secondary School from two (2) semester hours to three (3) semester hours courses. RATIONALE: Student opinions indicate that requirements for the above courses merit three semester hours rather than the present two semester hours. The Education staff agrees. Further, it is easier to schedule a full load for staff with three than with two hour courses. It is also believed the above change will cut down Friday absences. CHANGE: On pp. 104 & 108, in the statement following Education 368, the Teaching of Reading in the Secondary School, which reads "required for all secondary certification except Art, but recommended for Art," delete: "except Art, but recommended for Art." RATIONALE: Presently all teachers in middle schools (grades 6-9) in Asheville and Buncombe must teach one class in reading. It is believed that within the next three years all secondary teachers (10-12) will be required to teach a class in reading. Last month an art teacher employed in a Buncombe County middle school was required by the superintendent to come to UNC-A for a reading course. (Passed by Faculty Senate January 31, 1978.)
