Senate Document #5 APC Document #3 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes and requirements for the Department of Management: 1. Reduce the credit (from 4 cr. to 3 cr.) for Mgmt 400, Mgmt. 402, and Mgmt 404. When these courses were developed initially, field work was contemplated to augment the classroom activity, and this was adjudged to warrant 1 cr. in each of these courses. However, Mgmt 401 (the 9-credit internship course) is almost entirely fieldwork, and fulfills this need very well. The number of student contacts in the community that would be required if included in these three courses would be redundant, and also would impair relationships with "host organizations" for sustaining high-quality internship opportunities. 2. Increase the credit (from 3 cr. to 4 cr.) for Mgmt 406 (Development of Professional Personnel). This course does require fieldwork and laboratory work to cover adequately and content of the course. See Par. 4(e) below for proposed change in catalog statement. 3. Add new courses (which are conversions of previously experimental special topics courses to regularly-numbered, regularly-scheduled courses) as follows: Mgmt 345 Labor Legislation and Regulation (3). A study of the development and the nature of federal and state laws and regulations relating to labor, and the impact of these upon management. Prerequisite: Mgmt 240. Mgmt 431 Supervision: Theory and Practice (3). Principles and problems of supervision in business, public, and non-profit organizations. Prerequisite: Mgmt 312. Mgmt 460 Production Management (3). Provides an insight into how production is brought about. The course is designed to portray the conditions under which production takes place and the part managers and other workers play in effecting production. The course provides an overview of production of products and services; design outputs; designing production facilities; designing and controlling human inputs; production and inventory planning and control systems, and quality management systems. Prerequisite: Mgmt 380. Mgmt 461 Cost Control Concepts (3). Utilization of the budgetary process to isolate those areas in industrial enterprises where cost reductions and profit improvement are most likely to occur in the future. The course focuses on how and where to look for improvements in operating income. Prerequisites: Mgmt 350 and Mgmt 460. This course is not available for credit toward a B.A. degree. 4. Modify course descriptions in catalog as follows: (a) Mgmt 321 - Resource Allocation and Controls in Health Care Administration (3) Change prerequisite from Mgmt 320 to Econ 115 and Mgmt 320. Reason: Lack of basic understanding of elementary accounting precludes adequate coverage of the necessary course content (i.e., too much time must be devoted to covering what is available in Econ 115). (b) Mgmt 400 - Organizational Theory and Structure (4) Change title to: Organizational Theory (3) Reason: To be consistent with common nomenclature in the field. Present course description adequate. (c) Mgmt 402 - Managerial and Organizational Development (4) Change title to: Organizational Behavior (3) Reason: To be consistent with common nomenclature in the field. Present course description is adequate. Change prerequisite from Mgmt 200 to Mgmt 400. Reason: The content of Mgmt 402 is based upon the content of Mgmt 400, and should be offered and taken in sequence. This change can avoid confusion for students, and can avoid duplication of content (to the extent that background material must be provided now in Mgmt 402 for those who have not had 400). (d) Mgmt 404 - Management Strategies and Policies (3) Change title to: Management Strategies and Policies (3) Reason: Proposed title is more descriptive of what normally is a capstone course in the management field, and more informative as to actual coverage. Course description is adequate as is. Change prerequisite from: Econ 116 and Mgmt 400 to: Econ 116, Mgmt 200, 240, 311, 312, 380, and at least five additional credits in Management courses. Reason: To enable this course to function as a valid capstone course, as it originally was intended to do. Any lesser prerequisites create great disparity in the levels of background of those enrolled, and prevent adequate coverage of content. (e) Mgmt 406 - Development of Professional Personnel (3) Change credit to: 4 cr. (see Par. 2 above) Add to course description: Field work and laboratory assignments will be required: Reason: See Par. 2 above. (f) Mgmt 408 - Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Models (3) Change title to: Management Decision-Making (3) Reason: To be consistent with common nomenclature. Course description is adequate as is. 5. In the Personnel Management Option (p. 124, 1977-78 Catalog), delete Psych 215 (Applied Psychology) and insert Mgmt 345 (Labor Legislation and Regulation). Reason: Psych 215 will no longer be offered. A knowledge of labor regulations increasingly is vital to personnel management functions. 6. Revamp the course numbering system in the Management Department to (a) Indicate level and sequence of offerings more clearly and (b) provide a logical means of identifying sub-field relationships by using a "key digit" arrangement. (a) The proposed rationale is as follows: First digit indicates level of course (200, sophomore; 300, junior; 400, senior). Second digit indicates sub-field (see list below). Third digit indicates course number within sub-field. Subfields: -0- Theory; introductory; concepts -1- Organization and related areas -2- Health care and related areas -3- Personnel, supervision; management development -4- Law; ethics; environment -5- Marketing and related areas -6- Production; control; quantitative methods -7- Special topics in management -8- Policy; decision-making; small business -9- Internship (b) Implementation thus is proposed as follows: New No. Old No. Course Title 200 200 Philosophy and Concepts of Management (3) 240 300 Job of the Manager in a Changing Society (3) 271-3 271-3 Special Topics in Management (1-3) 311 400 Organizational Theory (3) 312 402 Organizational Behavior (3) 320 320 Structure and Functions of Health Care Institutions (3) 321 321 Resource Allocation and Controls in Health Care Institutions (3) 340 340 Business Law (3) 345 373 Labor Legislation and Regulation (3) 350 350 Marketing Management (3) 371-3 371-3 Special Topics in Management (1-3) 380 408 Management Decision-Making (3) 420 420 Public Regulation of Health Care Services (3) 421 421 Legal Environment of Health Care Institutions (3) 422 422 Information Systems in Health Care Institutions (3) 430 406 Development of Professional Personnel (4) 431 373 Supervision: Theory and Practice (3) 460 473 Production Management (3) 461 373 Cost Control Concepts (3) 471-3 471-3 Special Topics in Management (1-3) 480 404 Management Strategies and Policies (3) 490 410 Professional and Technical Internship (9) 7. Revamp core requirements for the management major as indicated below. Reason: to utilize new course, accommodate renumbering system, and to recognize alteration of course credits. ... the student is required to complete a core of 36 semester hours of management courses distributed as follows: Management 200, 240, 311, 312, 380, 430, 480, and 490, plus at least five semester hours selected from Management 271-3, 350, 371-3, 460, 461, or 471-3. 8. Change editorially all course number references so that such will agree with the new numbering system for departmental offerings. (Passed by Faculty Senate January 31, 1978)
