Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  51:                              Add new courses: MMAS 101, 201, 255, 350, 450

Effective Date: Fall 2007

1.         Add:     On page 198, new course MMAS 101:

101    Digital Design Principles (3)

An introduction to the basic principles of design and graphic visual communication. Core software skills will be taught with an emphasis on conceptual and aesthetic development. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

There will be minimal impact on the resources and staffing of the Multimedia Arts & Sciences (MMAS) department due to this change because we have been given a new faculty position and a new lecturer position.  No new lab equipment or space will be needed since this course has been taught once per semester for the past two academic years. This course will replace ART 100 as a requirement for the major because it more aptly addresses pedagogy for the multimedia major. There should not be too much impact since Digital Design Principles has been offered for a year as an option to ART 100. Therefore, the Art Department will not relinquish many numbers.

Rationale:

This course is an integral introductory course for the study of Multimedia Art and Sciences. This preparatory course is essential for successful pedagogy in digital studies. As such, it should be included in the curriculum.

2.         Add:     On page 198, new course, MMAS 201:

201    Think Graphic: Print and Type (3)

Foundation class focusing on the principles of print design and production. Emphasis is placed on the research, development and creation of typographically driven projects involving branding systems and poster and packaging design. Prerequisite: MMAS 101. Fall.

Impact:

There will be minimal impact on the resources and staffing of the Multimedia Arts & Sciences (MMAS) department due to this change because we have been given a new faculty position and a new lecturer position.  No new lab equipment or space will be needed since this course has been taught once per academic year for the past two years.

Rationale:

This course offers essential studies in effective print. It provides the student with skills and knowledge for professional activity or graduate studies. Graduate programs in multimedia often require this course of study on students’ applications. As such, it should be included in the curriculum.

3.         Add:     On page 199, new course, MMAS 255:

255    History of Graphic Design (3)

Traces the history of graphic design, from its origins in bookmaking to contemporary, new media. Focus will begin with the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th Century and continue through the modern and "post-modern" design movements of the 20th Century. Fall.

Impact:

There will be minimal impact on the resources and staffing of the Multimedia Arts & Sciences (MMAS) department due to this change because we have been given a new faculty position and a new lecturer position.  No new lab equipment or space will be needed since this course has been taught once as a special topics course.

Rationale:

This is an integral course for the study of Multimedia Art and Sciences. It offers a knowledge base that is critical for effective learning and thinking in the major. The course was offered in Fall 2006 with successful results and positive student feedback. As such, we want to include it in the curriculum.

4.         Add:     On page 199, new course, MMAS 350:

350    Video and Motion Graphics (3)

Through the exploration of video techniques and motion media design principles, students will concentrate on motion graphics production, and will create innovative work for cinema, television and digital interfaces. Prerequisites: MMAS 222. Spring.

Impact:

There will be minimal impact on the resources and staffing of the Multimedia Arts & Sciences (MMAS) department due to this change because we have been given a new faculty position and a new lecturer position. No new lab equipment or space will be needed. This course has been offered twice as a special topics, and will continue to be offered on an annual basis.

Rationale:

This course fulfills a need for the study of motion graphics with the use of video and multimedia effects. It synthesizes essential design and art principles, critical theory and production; resulting in innovative and contemporary projects that the student may apply to graduate studies or industry.

5.         Add:     On page 200, new course, MMAS 450

450    Digital Video Art (3)

Advanced course of study and techniques with a focus on conceptual problem solving, creating innovative art, and visual storytelling. Video as art will be the theme of the course as students synthesize current research and trends within their own experimental work. Prerequisite: MMAS 322. Fall.

Impact:

There will be minimal impact on the resources and staffing of the Multimedia Arts & Sciences (MMAS) department due to this change because we have been given a new faculty position and a new lecturer position.  No new lab equipment or space will be needed.
