Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  38:                              Change the prerequisite for MATH 191

Effective Date: Fall 2007

1.  Delete:         On page 192, the prerequisite for MATH 191

Prerequisite: MATH 167; or four years of high school mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Add :          On page 192, in place of deleted entry:

Students should have a thorough background in high school algebra and trigonometry before they enroll in MATH 191.

Impact:

There will be no impact on the resources and staffing of the math department due to this change.

Rationale:

Most of the students who enroll at UNCA have completed a Precalculus or advanced algebra and trigonometry course in high school.  Most do not need to take MATH 167 at UNCA in order to be ready to take Calculus I.  Having MATH 167 listed as a prerequisite is preventing those students from registering for MATH 191 without having an override. Adding the statement about students needing a thorough background in high school algebra and trigonometry will reduce the possibility of students enrolling in the course if they are not prepared.
