Impact:

No resource implications are involved. This proposal clarifies our minimum expectations for numbers of language hours that must be taken in our linguistically based concentrations and the relationship between language and culture courses. Students have sometimes assumed that they can only take 3 hours in Classical culture or, as detailed below, have filled up their major with a large number of culture courses.

Rationale:

As we have increased our offerings in culture courses and have stipulated no minimum number of courses to be taken in the original languages, we are beginning to see students graduate with fewer hours in language courses. Although they must, of course, pass the language competency examinations in order to graduate, we still feel that this is an undesirable trend. By making this change, especially if our new classical studies concentration is approved, we will make a clearer distinction between our linguistically based and culturally based concentrations.
