Section 1:  Development: Annual Programs

            (A) The Alumni Phonathon was conducted from August 18 - October 18, 2006.  We received $42,230 during this solicitation program.  8,798 alumni were called during the phonathon, and we actually spoke with 2,928 (or 33% of alumni we attempted to reach).  Of the 2,928 contacted, 641, or 22%, made a pledge or gift.   This record is well ahead of last year’s 113 alumni donors and alumni gifts of $24,366 on the same date.

The next alumni solicitation, direct mail, is scheduled for the second week of November.

(B) UNC Asheville Family Weekend was September 15-17, 2006.  Over 700 parents, grandparents, siblings and relatives of students participated.  Survey responses as well as anecdotal conversations were very positive.

(C) Parents Fund fund-raising efforts by phonathon began September 18, 2006 (the day after Family Weekend concluded) and, to date, we have received 320 pledges and gifts totaling $19,851 (or an average gift of $62.00).  Completion date for this fund-raising effort is November 1, 2006.

The first Family Newsletter of the year was published in August; the second issue will be mailed in early December.

The National Parents Council will have its annual fall meeting November 4, 2006.

They will receive an update on campus construction campus; consider a funding request

for a spring break project in New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity; and review a proposed new

parents and family website. Susan and Lowell Grabel of Atlanta will step down as National

Alumni Council chairs following three years of distinguished service.

(D) Senior Class Gift Campaign planning has begun for this year.  The kick-off of the student campaign coincided with the Senior Graduate Fair, October 25, 2006.  This year’s campaign will include a focused effort on December 2006 graduates prior to their commencement on December 16, 2006. Students are encouraged to contribute at least $35. before graduation to the program or academic department of their choice. Leadership for the campaign is provided by the Senior Class Board; 100% have pledged to make their gift.

(E) Other Items –

Work continues on the Alumni Satisfaction Survey with results due in December 2006.  The purpose of the survey is to answer the following 3 questions:  (1) Why do alumni who contribute financially to the University do so? (2) Why do alumni who do not contribute financially to the University not do so?  (3)  What messages would resonate with alumni non-donors to encourage them to make financial contributions to UNC Asheville?

Personal visits to alumni by Assistant Vice Chancellor Tim McLain to request financial support of their department within the University or for the Chancellor’s Excellence Fund will become the primary focus of Mr. McLain’s effort over the next 8 months.

Section 2.  Development:  Major Gifts

          (A) We had a strong first quarter in both cash received and total commitments.  The first payment of $500,000 from Joe Kimmel’s $2,000,000 pledge accounted for the difference in cash received.

            (B) Fundraising for the remainder of Pisgah House will be completed by Thanksgiving with all verbal agreements confirmed by written pledges.  In addition, a number of in-kind gifts (construction materials) have been offered.  The Committee (Janice Brumit, David Cogburn, Sue McClinton, Pam Turner, LaVoy Spooner, Ramona Rowe, and Charles Atkins) is finalizing plans for the building, and the architect, Ken Gaylord, is working on construction drawings.  Pledge payments are arriving on time.

            (C) Fundraising for the North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness is increasing in intensity.  Trustees will finalize plans for the building.  Chancellor Ponder has requested creation of a combined project for capital augmentation for the building, corresponding program endowment, and facility improvements to sports other than basketball.  Associate Vice Chancellor for Development Alex Comfort has been re-deployed to assume fundraising leadership for this combined project.

            (D) The divisional search is underway for an Associate Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts and Endowments.  The person in this position also will supervise Planned Giving efforts and Prospect Research activities.  The search is expected to close November 2.

            (E)  The annual Scholarship Luncheon is on October 31.  Current donors of $500 or more, those with endowed scholarships, and those with bequests for scholarships are invited along with their assigned students.

Section 3. Development:  Planned Giving

          (A)  A $1 million bequest from an IRA from a member of the Board of Trustees will be announced at the November 14 dinner of the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board, National Alumni Council, and National Parents Council.  Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented in the same program.

            (B)  A former staff member in Human Resources and spouse of a UNC Asheville professor has notified us in writing of her bequest plan for $125,000 to be used for scholarships.

            (C)  Thanks to a referral from Frosene and Steve Zeis, a bequest from a new friend of the University for $250,000 is in the final stages of approval.  The bequest will endow scholarships for a student from North Buncombe High School and a student from Pisgah High School in Canton.

            (D)  Our final Planned Giving Seminar led by George Groome of Colton Groome is on October 25.  Currently twenty-three participants are expected, mostly from the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.  Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development: Annual Programs Tim McClain is organizing this event.

            (E)  A letter regarding IRAs and new Federal regulations is being mailed at the end of October to approximately 4,000 alumni and friends.

Section 4. Development:  Endowment/Investment Committee

The combined endowments of the University and the University of North Carolina at Asheville Foundation, Inc. are managed by two entities:  UNC Management Company in Chapel Hill, and Deloitte & Touche in Atlanta.

As of 30 September 2006, the combined portfolio value was $20,111,691.00.

(On 30 September 2005, the combined portfolio value was $17,367,461.)

For the quarter ending 30 September 2006, funds managed by UNC Management Company totaled $11,274,190. 00.  Funds advised by Deloitte on the same date totaled $8,837,500.00.  Calendar year-to-date returns for the UNC Management Company are 10.81%; for Deloitte, calendar year-to-date returns are 5.95%.

The next meeting of the Investment Committee of the UNC Management Company is on Friday, 17 November 2006.  Bill Massey will join other members of the Endowment/Investment Committee who plan to attend the quarterly meeting in Chapel Hill.

The Endowment/Investment Committee will next meet on Tuesday, 16 January 2007, and will receive an investment performance report presented by William Moore of Deloitte & Touche.

Section 5. Development:  UNC Asheville Foundation, Inc.

The Foundation Board of Directors met on Thursday, 26 October 2006.  Prior to that meeting, an Orientation of new directors was on October 13.  In addition to ensuring that new directors are fully aware of the Foundation’s mission and goals, the Orientation also provided a time for new directors to dine with UNC Asheville students, to receive a student-guided tour of campus, to become acquainted with Patricia Hunt, Vice Chancellor for Finance & Operations, and to share community experiences with each other.  Leadership for the Orientation was provided by Dr. David Cogburn ’77, chair of the Foundation.

At the Foundation meeting of 24 August 2006, directors approved the following endowed funds: Luther and Ruth Barnhardt Scholarship Fund; Bill and Elizabeth Belz Scholarship; Phyllis Betts Honors Fund; CSAC (Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Committee) Scholarship; and the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Women in Science Scholarship Agreement.

At the same meeting, directors approved allocation of Unrestricted Endowments as follows: $20,000 for the Chancellor’s high priority initiatives, especially costs related to University community formation and to strategic planning;  $45,000 to the Provost’s office to assist programs in the areas of Academic Affairs relating to the Honors Program, faculty development in teaching, curriculum development, research, and seed money for craft campus initiatives; $20,000 to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to enhance professional development opportunities, to create an “Unleashing the Creativity Fund,” to support new assessment initiatives, and to help development of a citizenship education model; and $15,000 for support of campus diversity initiatives.  Foundation directors asked that those administering these funds indicate to recipient individuals, departments or organizations that the funds represent private support of UNC Asheville and are not state funds.
