Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

FWDC 5:           2005 Revision to the Guidelines for Awarding of Reappointment, Tenure and Promotion (Revision of SD1092S) (Faculty Handbook 3.5.4.1)

Effective Date:  Fall 2005

ADD:                under Section 3.5.4.1

E.  When the Chair is untenured

If the Chair of the faculty member is untenured, the Provost (or designated AVC) in consultation with the faculty member and his or her Chair will assign a tenured faculty member to serve in the role of Chair. The designated Chair should be a tenured faculty member appointed in the same division of the University or from a related department/program. The untenured Chair will be provided the opportunity to submit a letter of evaluation for the candidate's review dossier, and the candidate will have opportunity to respond to this letter.

Rationale:

This revision is intended to clarify the situation when the Chair is untenured and the faculty member is going up for tenure. This proposal is also intended to eliminate a potential conflict of interest.
