Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  45:       Clarify studio art requirements for B.A. with Concentration in Art History

Effective Date:  Fall 2005

Delete:        On pg. 59, under Bachelor of Arts with Concentration in Art History, section I:

Add:        On p. 59, in place of deleted entry:

I.  Required courses in the concentration—36 hours:  ART 100; either ART 101 or 103; ARTH 201, 202, 480; 12 hours of 300-400 level ARTH courses with at least 3 hours from Ancient/Medieval: 310, 320; 3 hours from Renaissance/Baroque: 330, 340; 3 hours from Modern/Contemporary: 355, 360, 365; 3 hours from Non-Western: 380, 385; and 9 hours of approved courses outside the department (see Art Department Guidelines).

Impact:   This change in wording clarifies the degree’s requirement of 6 hours of studio art courses.  ART 100 is a prerequisite for ART 101 and 103.  Thus as previously written in the catalogue, it appeared as a “hidden prerequisite.”  This change corrects that problem and makes explicit to students that ART 100 is not an optional course.

Rationale:  This change clarifies the degree’s requirements and prevents any misunderstanding about required courses in the curriculum.
