Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 26:         Changes to the Academic Suspension Policy

Effective Date:   Fall semester 2004

Delete:    pg 35 Under the section "Academic Suspension", the paragraph following the table of Minimum Grade-Point Average.

Replace: pg 35 Under the section "Academic Suspension", insert the following paragraph following the table of Minimum Grade-Point Average.

After suspension, a student is eligible to re-enroll by submitting an Application for Readmission through the Admissions Office by the stated deadline for the semester of re-enrollment. Students returning from suspension are limited to 14 credit hours per semester or one course per summer term. No student with fewer than 24 hours attempted at UNCA will be suspended. A student must have been on academic warning for at least one regular semester before suspension.

Rationale:
(1) The process for readmission has changed. All students who have not enrolled for at least one semester go through the Admissions Office for re-enrollment.

(2) The intention of the 30 semester hours was to allow students two semesters in which to adjust to college and, if necessary, improve academic standing prior to suspension. However, the use of 30 attempted hours creates the possibility for students to extend poor academic performance over three semesters, especially in light of the 14 semester hour limit for students on Academic Warning. Changing the attempted hours to 24 semester hours prevents suspension of students after only one semester, while limiting continued poor academic performance to, at most, two full-time semesters.
