Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC 19:         Changes in Concentrations in the Drama Department

Effective Date: August 2004

1. Delete: Section I and III on page 88 under "Concentration in Drama"

Add: Replace with the following:

I. Required courses in the major--34 hours, including 25 hours from the Drama core consisting of DRAM 103, 111, 121, 122, 144, 244, 245, 355, 358. The Drama concentration requires 9 additional hours of DRAM electives including 6 hours at the 300-400 level.

III. Other departmental requirements--Major competency is demonstrated through production and performance laboratory experiences with the Theatre of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Requirements and procedures for demonstration of major competency should be obtained from the department chair. Oral competency is demonstrated through the successful completion of DRAM 103. Computer competency is demonstrated through successful completion of DRAM 111, 121, 244 and 355.

Impact: This proposal will reduce by three credit hours the major requirements for those selecting a "Concentration in Drama." The changes include dropping DRAM 112 Introduction to Acting II, and DRAM 348 Shakespeare in Performance as requirements, but adds a new course, DRAM 358 Topics in Dramatic Literature, Theory, or History. These changes will not affect minor or university requirements at all. No other department will be affected by the changes, nor will the Licensure Program. No additional resources will be required.

Rationale: The Drama Department is attempting to make all of its concentrations share a common core of classes. The courses specified above have been identified as those that all Drama majors should take. By reducing the total number of hours for this concentration, students will have more flexibility to pursue their own interests.

2. Delete: Section I and III on page 88 under "Concentration in Acting and Directing."

Add:

I. Required courses in the major--38 hours, including 25 hours from the Drama core consisting of 103, 111, 121, 122, 144, 244, 245, 355, 358. The Acting and Directing concentration requires 13 additional hours including DRAM 104, 212, 314, 362, and either 415 or 462.

Impact: This proposal will reduce by 3 credits the major requirements for those selecting a "Concentration in Acting and Directing." These changes will be reflected in the minor, and will not affect university requirements at all. No other department will be affected by the changes, nor will the Licensure Program. No additional resources will be required.

Rationale: The Drama Department is attempting to make all of its concentrations share a common core of classes. The core courses are reflected in the scope of the concentration. This allows for a common ground across all the areas of concentration and gives the students more choices while reducing their course load. By reducing the total number of hours for this concentration, students will have more flexibility to pursue their own interests.

3. Delete: Sections I, II, and III on page 89 under "Concentration in Design and Production"

Add:

I. Required courses in the major--36-39 hours, including 25 hours from the Drama core consisting of DRAM 103, 111, 121, 122, 144, 244, 245, 355, 358. The Design and Production concentration requires 11-14 additional hours including DRAM 220; 6-9 hours from one of the following emphasis areas; and 3 hours chosen from the following courses not already used for the emphasis area.
Costume: DRAM 325, 440
Lighting: DRAM 331, 336, 437
Scene Design: DRAM 331, 432 Sound: DRAM 334, 434

II. Required courses outside the major--None.

Impact: This effectively will not change noticeably the current structure of the concentration of design and production. It will allow students to experience two out of four areas of design and adds a stage management class to the curriculum and reduces the number of hours from the current 42 to 36-39. These changes will not affect minor or university requirements at all. No other department will be affected by the changes, nor will the Licensure Program. No additional resources will be required.

Rationale: One problem in the current catalog is the requirement for 325 and 326. 326 does not exist and should have been listed as 440. By reducing the number of hours in the track, the drama major is given greater flexibility to explore areas of interest. In addition, we have added a Stage Management class that we feel will be beneficial to all students in theatre, but especially in the area of design and technology. This will also allow the Drama Department to establish a core of classes that each concentration will have to include in its structure. This helps to institute a foundation upon which specialties can be built. It is the basis of a good liberal arts approach to drama.
