Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 15:         Removing General and Research Emphases, and

the Concentration in Political Economy;

Adding Computer Competency Requirements for

Political Science with Teacher Licensure

Effective Date: Fall 2004

A. Delete: On pg 185, the entries for General Emphasis, Research Emphasis, and
Concentration in Political Economy

Add: On pg 185, in place of the deleted entries:

Major in Political Science

I. Required courses in the major--34-35 hours, including: POLS 220, 281, 450, 460; either 400 or both 390 and 490; and 21 additional hours in political science (POLS 150 may not be included in these hours).

II. Required courses outside the major--4 hours: STAT 185.

III. Senior competency is demonstrated by satisfactory completion of POLS 450, 460; and either 400 or both 390 and 490. Computer competency and oral competency are satisfied by POLS 460.

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: In order to remove the appearance of a sharp distinction between the General Emphasis and the Research Emphasis in Political Science, the two emphasis areas are being removed, thereby offering students a more unified major. The current listing of requirements implies a greater distinction between emphases than actually exists. The department encourages all students to engage in both research and internship or service-related activities and courses. The Political Economy concentration was dropped by the Economics department and needs to be removed from the offerings of the Political Science department. The change in the wording for competency is a result of the need for all students to demonstrate computer literacy. They must have word processing skills to successfully fulfill course work in political science, and they must be able to conduct research on the internet in order to write a significant research paper. POLS 460 is a course in which students demonstrate computer skills.

B. Delete: On pg 185, under Political Science with Teacher Licensure, III.
