APC Document 10: Clarification of Literature major requirements for Concentration in Literature and
Concentration in Creative Writing
Effective Date: Fall 2004
1. Delete: On pg 146, under Concentration in Literature, I:
I. Required courses in the major--36 hours, including: LIT 241 (with no more than an additional three hours elected from 200-level courses); 321, 322, 323, 324; 354 or 356; 3 hours from 483, 485, 487, or 489; 491; 9-12 hours selected from 300- or 400-level courses.
Add: On pg146, under Concentration in Literature, I:
I. Required courses in the major--36 hours, including: LIT 241, 321, 322, 323, 324, 491; one course from 354 or 356; one course from 483, 485, 487 or 489. In addition, students must choose one of the following options: a) 12 additional hours in LIT, with at least 9 hours at the 300-400-level; or b) 9 hours of LIT courses at the 300-400 level, and 3 hours of creative writing. Note: an internship experience cannot be used as the creative writing course.
2. Delete: On pg 147, under Concentration in Creative Writing, I:
I. Required courses in the major--36 hours, including: LIT 241; 9 hours selected from LIT 321, 322, 323, 324; 354 or 356; 9 hours selected from other Literature courses (with no more than three hours below the 300 level); or LANG 260, plus 6 hours elected from Literature courses at the 300 level or above; 9 hours selected from Language 300-level or 400-level Creative Writing courses, of which at least 3 hours must be at the 400-level; LANG 497.
Add: On pg 147, under Concentration in Creative Writing, I:
I. Required courses in the major--36 hours, including: Literature courses--LIT 241; 9 hours selected from 321, 322, 323, 324; one course from 354 or 356. Language courses--9 hours of creative writing (LANG 353 and above), with at least 3 hours at the 400-level; LANG 497. In addition, students must choose one of the following options: a) 9 additional hours in LIT, with at least 6 hours at the 300-400-level, or b) LANG 260, and 6 hours of LIT courses at the 300-400 level. Note: an internship experience cannot be used to fulfill one of the LANG course requirements.
Rationale: The last clause in the current language for the Concentration in Literature did not specify that electives for the major in Literature must be LIT courses. We are adding that specification. The other change is simply a clarification, not a substantive change.
In the Concentration in Creative Writing, the main substantive change is to exclude the internship course from counting toward the requirement of creative writing courses. Only 9 hours of creative writing workshops are required in the track, and we consider this to be the minimum acceptable. The language also excludes other LANG courses from this requirement, such as Lang 323, The Teaching of Writing and Standard Grammar.
