Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 9:         Changes to Environmental Studies Minor Requirements.

Effective date: Fall, 2004

Delete: On pg 107, the requirements for the Minor in Environmental Studies:

22 hours in Environmental Studies consisting of ENVR 130, 234, 241, 330, 334, one advanced ENVR elective; ECON 337.

Add: On pg 107, in place of the deleted entry:

19 hours in Environmental Studies consisting of ENVR 130, 241, 330; two courses from ENVR 234, ENVR 334 or ECON 337; one advanced ENVR elective.

Impact: No impact is expected. We have one or two students inquire about a minor each year. The department currently allows a course substitution for ECON 337 for the minor; students usually choose an advanced ENVR elective in place of ECON 337. The total number of hours required for a minor range from 18 to 24 at UNCA, and many departments have a requirement of 18 to 20 hours.

Rationale:
The requirements for the ENVR major were changed for fall 1996. Prior to fall 1996, ENVR majors were required to take ECON 337. The requirements for the major were changed so that students would chose two of the following three courses: ENVR 234, ENVR 334, ECON 337. At the time we changed the requirements for the major, we did not change the requirements for the minor (an oversight). We propose the change in the requirements of the minor to be more consistent with the requirements of the major.
