Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

EC 7:       Proposal to Revise the Faculty Senate Constitution

Because the University of North Carolina at Asheville has grown and changed dramatically since the Faculty Senate Constitution was last revised in 1982, and because the constitution as currently constructed often fails to present clear guidelines for senate actions or in some cases creates numerous problems with governance, the Faculty Senate of 2002-2003 hereby approves the formation of a Task Force to revise the Faculty Senate Constitution.

The Constitution Task Force shall be formed by the 2002-2003 senate body, and shall consist of two faculty members from each of the respective academic program areas, and shall reflect a reasonable diversity of faculty ranks and interests.

The Faculty Senate of 2003-2004 shall, at its first meeting, elect one member of the new senate to serve as chair of The Constitutional Task Force. This individual will be excused from serving as chair of any of the standing senate committees.

The task force shall report regularly on its progress to the Executive Committee of the 2003-2004 senate, with a designated goal of providing a revised draft of the constitution for a first reading of the whole senate not later than, February 2004. A second reading shall occur no later than March 2004, with the goal of sending the proposed final draft to the full faculty for a vote no later than April, 2004.
