Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 19:   Change in competency exam requirement for Accounting majors.

Effective Date: Fall 2003

Delete: On page 155, under General Requirements for Accounting

IV. To take the competency exam during the final senior semester and to have passed it prior to graduation

Add: On page 155, under General Requirements for Accounting

IV. Students must take and pass the accountancy competency exam within one year preceding graduation or completion of the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate of major in Accounting. The exam will be administered during the Fall and Spring semesters and will not be administered during the summer.

Impact Statement: This change has no impact on the department's majors or minors, the university's requirements, other departments, or future department course offerings.

Rationale: Currently students who have passed the exam must retake the exam during their final semester. Nothing is gained by requiring the students to retake the exam after having passed it. Students graduating in May may take the exam the semester they graduate or the previous Fall semester. Students graduating in December may take the exam the semester they graduate or the previous Spring semester. Students graduating in July may take the exam in the Fall or Spring semester immediately preceding their graduation.
