Sense of the Senate

APC 34: Proposed Change to the Academic Calendar

Sense of the Academic Policies Committee

Recognizing the vote of a majority of the faculty responding, Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Senate that UNCA adopt a new academic calendar as proposed by President Molly Broad and Affirmed by the Board of Governors in February, 2002.

APC hearby moves that:

"The University of North Carolina at Asheville should change its

academic calendar (beginning Fall Semester, 2003) to consist of 14

weeks of classes, followed by a "Mandatory Finals Week."

Neither this motion nor the Molly Broad proposal dictates the type of final exam required. It is the understanding of APC that the exam need not be comprehensive; it need not take two-and-one-half hours (although two-and-one-half hour exams would be allotted for each course); it need not be a written exam. Each academic program or instructor must decide the type of exam best suited for the discipline. But all faculty would be required to meet their classes and to administer a final exam appropriate to the course.

Should the senate pass this motion, the resulting "Sense of the Senate" should be forwarded to the offices of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Services.
