Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 28:     Catalog Changes in Economics

Effective Date: Fall 2002

a. Change Advanced Placement Grade

Delete: In Catalog 2001-2002, on page 28, the following:

Economics

Macro 4,5 3 ECON 101

Micro 4,5 3 ECON 102

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Economics

Macro 3,4,5 3 ECON 101

Micro 3,4,5 3 ECON 102

Impact: No impact on other departments.

Rationale: This will save a small number of students from repeating work that they have already performed satisfactorily and may encourage some students to attend UNCA who otherwise would not. The acceptance of AP grades of 3,4,5 is the norm at UNCA and is consistent with practice at many other institutions.

b. Change International Baccalaureate Grade

Delete: In Catalog 2001-2002, on page 29, the following:

Economics 6,7 3 ECON 101

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Economics 5,6,7 3 ECON 101

Impact/Rationale: Please see the Impact and Rationale for (a).

c. Change Prerequisites

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisite: ECON 102.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 96, in the entry for 305 Private Finance, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 102 (or higher); ECON 210 or MATH 155 (or higher); and junior-level status.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 102 or 210; satisfaction of the general education requirement in mathematics.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 96, in the entry for 306 Managerial Finance, the following:

Prerequisite: ACCT 215; or permission of instructor.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisite: ACCT 215.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 97, in the entry for 337 Environmental Economics and Policy, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 102; ENVR 130; or permission of instructor.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 102 and ENVR 130.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 97, in the entry for 345 Economics of Natural Resources, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 102 or permission of instructor.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisite: ECON 102.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 97, in the entry for 350 International Trade and Finance, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101, 102; or permission of instructor.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101 and 102.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 97, in the entry for 360 Mathematical Economics, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101, 102; pre- or corequisite MATH 191.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101 and 102; MATH 191.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 97, in the entry for 365 Econometrics, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101 or 102; STAT 185; or permission of instructor.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Prerequisites: ECON 101 or 102; STAT 185.

Impact: No impact.

Rationale: The prerequisite changes simplify and clarify the requirements for plausible success in each course. Elimination of the expression 'permission of instructor' will provide for computer-based prerequisite checking at a later time. Students without the necessary prerequisite(s) but who may still be successful in a course will still be able to seek the permission of the instructor by personal appeal.

d. Change Course Titles of ECON 316 and 480

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 96, the following:

316 Transaction Cost Economics (3)

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

316 Seminar in Transaction Cost Economics (3)

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on page 98, the following:

480 Research Seminar in Economics (3)

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

480 Senior Research in Economics (3)

Impact: None.

Rationale: The new titles more accurately describe the courses and how they are conducted.

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on pages 94-95, under Economics with Teacher Licensure, the following:

I. Required courses in the major--34 hours, including: ECON 101, 102, 301, 302, 365, 380, 316 or 450, 480; 12 additional hours in Economics, at least 6 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

Impact: None.

Rationale: Student alternatives among seminars have been broadened from two to three for each course of study. This will ensure that students are able to complete their degrees in a timely fashion while providing them with a selection of courses that is more consistent with their interests and career goals. At the same time the required courses in the major have been rearranged to reflect the following pattern: major core; seminar; concentration core; and electives. This rearrangement will facilitate consistent curricular thinking in the future.

f. Demonstration of Computer Competency

Delete: In Catalog 2001-02, on pages 93-95, under each of the following courses of study (General Economics, Environmental Economics, International Economics, Monetary Economics and Finance, and Economics with Teacher Licensure) the following:

III. Other departmental requirements--Senior demonstration of competency and oral competency are met by completion of ECON 480 with a grade of C or higher.

Add: In place of the deleted entries, the following:

III. Other departmental requirements--Senior demonstration of competency and oral competency are met by completion of ECON 480 with a grade of C or higher. Demonstration of computer competency is met by completion of ECON 365.

Impact: No impact.

Rationale: The criteria of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools require a demonstration of computer competency of every degree candidate. Furthermore, the possession of computer competency is a necessary dimension of contemporary life. The computer competencies transmitted and assessed in ECON 365 Econometrics (word processing, statistical analysis, graph generation and internet use) are those that are arguably most relevant for an economics major.
