Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

FWDC 1: Proposal to establish the "Adjunct Faculty Committee" as a new standing committee

Effective Date: October, 2000

Overview:
An ad-hoc committee, organized by Milton Ready and others, has functioned since Fall, 1999. It has surveyed adjunct faculty about their needs, facilitated meetings with the vice-chancellor, raised funds, and organized campus-wide meetings of all adjunct faculty. At its campus wide meeting last month, those present requested that their committee be made permanent.

Rationale:
The ad-hoc committee believes that the interests of adjunct-faculty are not sufficiently represented by existing bodies who tend to faculty welfare across campus. A standing committee could work to integrate adjunct faculty and their concerns into the University community. Additionally, it would act as an advocate for adjunct concerns. Finally, it would give adjuncts representation and a voice in university affairs.

Structure:
the following individuals will serve annual, renewable terms:
3 adjuncts, chosen by peers at their first Fall meeting
1 full-time faculty member, chosen by adjuncts at their first Fall meeting
1 FWDC appointee
1 appointee from Academic Affairs

Reporting: VCAA

Faculty Handbook Impact:
The Committee for Adjunct Faculty will be listed in the Faculty Handbook, section 10.4, "UNCA standing committees."
