Impact Statement: The changes proposed above do not fundamentally alter the curriculum. The two core courses (cell/molecular biology; ecology/evolution) that were originally scheduled to be taken during a student's sophomore year now will be completed during the freshman year. General zoology, since it will remain unchanged for the new curriculum, and general botany are returned to the sophomore year, in their current positions. The changes proposed above will not alter overall requirements for the major, minor, or All-University requirements.

Concurrences: The changes likely will not impact other departments. Nevertheless, concurrences have been requested from Chemistry and Environmental Studies.

Rationale: After much deliberation over new course content, and on how the sequence of courses for the major will affect student performance and achievement, it was necessary for the biology faculty to alter the sequence in which biology majors will take the four core courses of the new curriculum.
