Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 8: Education: Allowing EDUC 315 to count for the General Education Arts Lab requirement

Effective Date: 2001-2002

Add: on page 42 in the section delineating the courses that may be substituted for the laboratory portion of the arts requirement,

"EDUC 315: Creative Arts, K-6 (4)

Delete: on page 105, in the course description for EDUC 315

"Prerequisite: EDUC 310."

Impact Statement:
a. Dr. Melinda Costello has indicated her approval of this request. Allowing EDUC 315 to count as the general education Arts lab will reduce slightly the number of students enrolled in other arts labs.

b. Enrollment in EDUC 315 is not expected to increase; non-education students are unlikely to take this 4-hour course to fulfill a one-hour requirement. However, EDUC 315 is expected to be offered in both spring and fall semesters, so a small enrollment increase is manageable.

c. This change is not expected to have significant impact on any department's staffing needs or course offerings.

Rationale:
Faculty in the Education Department have been charged by the UNCA administration to reduce all programs leading to licensure to 128 hours. One component of such program review/revision is to determine instances of overlapping competencies. All arts lab competencies are being addressed in EDUC 315. Students work extensively in both the visual arts and the dramatic arts. Giving students Arts lab credit for EDUC 315 will reduce the number of hours in the program by one while still allowing students to meet all required competencies.
