Statement of Faculty
Senate Action:
APC
Document 12: Delete ENVR /ATMS 331,
Principles of Air Pollution
Replace ENVR 331
with ENVR 381 in the elective options in the Earth Science concentration
Effective date: Fall 2012
1. Delete: On
page 141, the entry for ENVR 331:
331 Principles
of Air Pollution (ATMS 331) (3)
Sources, sinks and controls of air
pollution, legal aspects, meteorological factors which influence air pollution,
analytical techniques for quantifying air pollution. Prerequisites: CHEM 132, and one course from ATMS 103 or 113 or ENVR 130. Even
years Fall.
2. Delete: On page 86, the
entry for ATMS 331:
331 Principles
of Air Pollution (ENVR 331) (3)
Sources, sinks and controls of air
pollution, legal aspects, meteorological factors which influence air pollution,
analytical techniques for quantifying air pollution. Prerequisites: CHEM 132, and one course from ATMS 103 or 113 or ENVR 130. Even
years Fall.
Impact Statement:
This
course has been under-enrolled the past four years. By deleting this course and offering a course
designed for ecology track students, we will give students more options of
upper level courses in a semester that usually has few choices. There will no
impact on resources or staffing in ENVR because the same faculty member who
taught ENVR 331 will be teaching a new 3-hour course.
Rationale:
This
course was designed for students in the now discontinued Pollution Control
Track in ENVR, and was cross-listed with ATMS.
Since the Pollution Control Track was discontinued, the course has been
under-enrolled and no ATMS students have taken it in the past four years.
3. Delete: On page 138, under Concentration in Earth Science:
31–33
hours distributed as follows: ENVR 105, 320, 338, 385; 15-17 hours of Earth
Science electives chosen from ENVR 106, 282, 310, 331, 362, 383, 384, and PHYS 131 or 221.
Add:
On
page 138, in place of deleted entry:
31–33 hours distributed as follows: ENVR
105, 320, 338, 385; 15-17 hours of Earth Science electives chosen from ENVR
106, 282, 310, 362, 381, 383, 384,
and PHYS 131 or 221.
Impact:
None. Earth
Science majors will still have the same number of elective options.
Rationale:
ENVR
331 is being deleted from the curriculum due to poor enrollment. ENVR 381 has
been allowed as an advanced Earth Science elective since inception of the Earth
Science concentration. This action corrects an error of omission in the
proposal document submitted to APC when the Earth Science concentration was
revised in academic year 2008-2009.
