Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 6: Change when Oral
Competency will be tested for majors in French
Effective Date: Fall 2012
1. Delete: On
page 144, under Major in French, in item IV:
Oral competency:
oral competency will be tested after FREN 320 by the assembled faculty of
French.
Add: On page
144, in place of deleted entry:
Oral
competency: oral competency will be tested after FREN 300.
Impact
Statement:
This proposal will not affect major,
minor, and university requirements. It
does not affect any other program and therefore no concurrences are required.
Since students can currently enroll twice in FREN 300 for credit, this change
will not affect future course offerings or staffing needs.
Rationale:
This change is intended to allow
earlier completion of the oral competency requirement, immediately following
focused coursework on oral skills. Students will be able to identify areas to
work on during planned study abroad, and they may repeat FREN 300 for credit,
further refining their oral skills as they progress in the program. It is more
logical to test at the end of FREN 300, a course whose entire focus is on
development of oral skills, rather than at the end of FREN 320. The reference to "the assembled
faculty" is being removed to parallel the language used for the capstone
and computer competency requirements.
