Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 61:                                                          Change description for INTS 365

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

1. Delete:    On page 178, the description for INTS 365, International Experiential Learning Project (3-6):

Students participate in a service learning project or internship either overseas or with an approved international organization in the US. An IP grade may be awarded at discretion of instructor. May be repeated for a total of 6 hours credit. Prerequisite: permission of International Studies director. See International Studies director.

Add:        On page 178, in place of deleted entry:

Students participate in an experiential learning project or internship with an international focus in the U.S. The project or internship must be approved by the International Studies director. An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor. May be repeated for a total of 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: permission of International Studies director.

Impact:

There will be no added faculty resources needed for this change. The impact is in helping students by broadening the scope of the course.

Rationale:

This change helps students who are interested in pursuing individualized experiential learning projects or internships with an international focus achieve their goal. It also responds to a previously discriminatory element in the curriculum, whereby students who were unable to study abroad either because of economic reasons (e.g. first generation college students or students from difficult socio-economic backgrounds) or family circumstances (e.g. non-traditional students who have families and are unable to spend a semester away) now have an option that is broad enough to give them the opportunity to pursue the international studies concentration.
