Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 56:                                                          Delete VMP 207 and 209

                                                                                                Add/reinstate VMP205

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

1a. Delete:          On page 206, catalog listing for VMP 207, Video Production Design (2)

                                207         Video Production Design (2)

Introduction to the process of visual media production, from a video perspective, emphasizing writing, aesthetics, visual composition and design. Heavy emphasis on format, structure, terminology, and safety issues. This course is prerequisite to all VMP courses. Fall and Spring.

1b. Delete:         On page 206, catalog listing for VMP 209, Video Production Elements

                                209         Video Production Elements (2)

Introduction to the practice of visual media production, from a video perspective, emphasizing the elements of camera, light, sound and editing. This course emphasizes the actual production of video projects and requires an extensive out-of-class time commitment. Pre- or corequisite: VMP 207. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

The content of these courses will be combined and presented in a streamlined, 3-credit-hour format under the old catalog listing, VMP 205, Basic Video Production.

Rationale:

The department is moving away from two-credit workshops in the curriculum. The courses were split originally so as to allow Mass Communication majors interested in commercial media or journalism to get a taste of video without the in-depth work of a three-credit course. Media convergence issues in communication industries led MCOM eventually to require both courses, taking the department back to the old model. The two-hour format has proven difficult for structuring program offerings, student schedules, and for continuity of instruction.

2. Add:                 On page 206, catalog listing for VMP 205, Basic Video Production:

                                205         Basic Video Production (3)

Introduction to the process of visual media production. It emphasizes writing, visual composition and design, structure, terminology, and safety issues. The course also covers the elements of camera, light, sound and editing. This course involves the actual production of video projects and requires an extensive out-of-class time commitment. This course is prerequisite to all VMP courses. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

The content of this course is an updated, streamlined version of MCOM's old course of the same number and title. It combines the content of both VMP 207 and VMP 209. A side benefit of this change is that the three credit version of this material will be more accessible to students in other majors, such as MMAS.
