APC Document 43:                                          Change to Major and Minor requirements in MMAS

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

                          I.      Required courses for the major—39–41 hours with at least 15 hours at the 300-400 level, including: MMAS 101, 107, 121, 151, 222, 322, 438, 490; CSCI 201 or 244; and 12–13 hours as follows:

Add:              On page 219, in place of deleted entry:

                          I.      Required courses for the major—39 hours, including: MMAS 101, 107, 121, 151, 222, 242, 322, 438, 490; one course from MMAS 144 or 344; one course from CSCI 181, 182, 185; and 6 hours from one of the following Emphasis areas:

Impact:

There will be no impact on the resources and staffing of the MMAS or CSCI departments due to this change. The total number of hours required to complete the major is the same, and the students will benefit from a simplified curriculum.

Rationale:

These are editorial changes resulting from changes in both the MMAS and CSCI curricula. MMAS 242 and the choice of MMAS 144 or 344 have been added to replace the Foundation and Aesthetic requirement. CSCI 201 and 244 have been removed from the CSCI curriculum and are replaced with CSCI 181, 182, and 185. These three courses are different versions of an introductory computer science programming course. The addition of CSCI 182, Introductory Programming for Media Applications, adds a course that teaches programming using the processing language that is designed for developing interactive visual and aural compositions, and is therefore appropriate for MMAS majors.  Keeping CSCI 181 facilitates transfer students’ pathways to the program because it is included in the NC Community College Articulation Agreement (CSC 120).
