Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 42:          Remove CSCI 344 and MMAS 332 as options in the Interactive Design emphasis area in MMAS;

                                                Remove VMP 207 and 209 as options in the Video Art and Design emphasis area in MMAS

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

1.Delete:             On page 219, under Major in Multimedia Arts and Sciences, in C.2.:

                                                CSCI 344; MMAS 320, 330, 332, 358, 420.

        Add:              On page 219, in place of deleted entry:

                                                MMAS 320, 330, 358, 420.

Impact:

There will be negligible impact to CSCI because CSCI 344, Internet Server Side Technology, is important for web developers to take. MMAS 332, Experimental Media, will become an elective course within the major.

Rationale:

MMAS’s emphasis areas require only two courses, therefore we believe these courses should specifically address the emphasis area. Topics covered in MMAS 332 are not limited to the Interactive Design emphasis area; therefore, this course should not be part of the emphasis area. Likewise, topics addressed in CSCI 344 are not confined to Interactive Design.

2.Delete:             On page 219, under Major in Multimedia Arts and Sciences, in C.3.:

                                                both VMP 207 and 209.

Impact:

There will be negligible impact to MMAS because most majors take MMAS 350 and 450. There will be minimal impact on VMP for the same reason.  The required hours load will drop from a possible 41 to 40 hours.

Rationale:

The emphasis areas are areas of specialization within the major.  The VMP 207 and 209 courses are introductory video courses and stand out within the MMAS curriculum as being the only 2xx courses in any of the MMAS emphasis areas.
