Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 40:          Delete the Foundation, and Aesthetics and Social Awareness areas in MMAS

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

1. Delete:             On page 219, under Major in Multimedia Arts and Sciences:

A.   Foundation—select 3 hours from: ART 111; CSCI 202; MCOM 104; MMAS 201; MUSC 131.

B.   Aesthetics and Social Awareness—select 3 hours from: ARTH 365; MCOM 380, 382, 490; MMAS 342, 344; PHIL 310.

C.   Emphasis Areas—select six to seven hours from one of the following areas

Add:              On page 219, in place of deleted entry:

Emphasis Areas—select six hours from one of the following areas

Impact:

MMAS students will still take courses to satisfy these requirements, but instead of choosing from a list of courses that may or may not provide them with the skills and information they need, they will take specific courses that better prepare them for the rest of the program. There is no change in the number of hours required for the major. No new faculty will be required because of these changes.

Rationale:

MMAS 242 teaches the historical background of the New Media discipline and as such should be a core requirement of the program. It will be the course used for the Aesthetics requirement. MMAS 144 and MMAS 344 provide the historical context of animation and design for our students. These will fulfill the Foundation component.
