Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 34:          Adding concentration in Physics with Comprehensive Science Licensure

Effective Date:   Fall 2011

1.       Add:              On page 235, new concentration in Physics with 9-12 Comprehensive Science Teacher

Licensure

Physics with 9-12 Comprehensive Science Teacher Licensure

This concentration is coordinated with the Department of Education to provide licensure in all high school science curricula. Students who wish to receive teacher licensure should review requirements found in the Education section of the catalog and see the appropriate licensure advisor for additional information.

                                      I.      Required courses in the major—28 hours: PHYS 101 and 121 or PHYS 102 and 122; PHYS 221, 222, 310, 326, 331, 332; 323 or 325; one course from 401, 402, and 414.

II.      Required courses outside the major—28–31 hours, including BIOL 123, 124; CHEM 111, 132 (or a satisfactory score on the Chemistry Placement Examination), 145, 236; ENVR 105, 130; MATH 191, 192, 291; and those additional course requirements indicated in the Education section of the catalog.

III.      Other departmental requirements—Senior demonstration of competency is satisfied by a departmental competency examination. Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in PHYS 331 and 332. Computer competency is demonstrated in PHYS 331 and 332 during oral presentations judged to be satisfactory by the department faculty.

Impact:

Minimal; the number of physics majors in the teacher licensure program is typically small.

Rationale:

The total minimum number of hours required for a student to complete the physics major with comprehensive science licensure concentration (including ILS, major, correlate, and education courses and taking into account possible efficiencies in ILS course choices) is currently 126.  Physics majors in the Comprehensive Science Licensure concentration take 12 more hours of science coursework than physics majors in the Physics Teacher Licensure concentration.  The proposed changes will reduce the number of hours to 124 and make the program more feasible and more appropriate for interested students while still maintaining a strong foundation in physics.

“Comprehensive Teacher Licensure” licenses an individual to teach any of the primary high school science subjects. Since most high schools do not have full-time positions for teachers of physics only, having comprehensive science licensure is clearly a benefit to both the licensure student and the potential employer.

2. Delete:            On page 234, under Physics with Teacher Licensure:

This concentration is coordinated with the Department of Education to provide a

student with the opportunity of obtaining teaching licensure with a major in Physics.

Add:              On page 234, in place of deleted entry:

This concentration is coordinated with the Department of Education to provide a student with teacher licensure in 9-12 Physics. Students who wish to receive teacher licensure should review requirements found in the Education section of the catalog and see the appropriate licensure advisor for additional information.

Impact:

None.

Rationale:

The new wording clarifies that the licensure is in physics only. With the proposed addition of the concentration in Physics with Comprehensive Science licensure, there needs to be a distinction.

3. Delete:            On page 235, the last paragraph under Physics with Teacher Licensure:

Students who wish to receive teacher licensure should review requirements found in the Education section of the catalog and see the appropriate licensure advisor for additional information. Students seeking licensure in 9–12 Comprehensive Science (as distinct from Physics) must complete the requirements listed above as well as BIOL 123 and 124, CHEM 145 and 236, and ENVR 105.

Impact:

None.

Rationale:

A new concentration is being created for the 9-12 Comprehensive Science Licensure.
