Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 32:                                          Allow total of 8 units to count for Studio Art minor for the

Art History concentration and adjust required courses

Effective Date: Fall 2011

1.  Delete:            On pg. 69, under Minor in Studio Art:

I.     Minor in two-dimensional media—26 hours, including: ART 110, 111; ARTH 201, 202; 12 elective studio hours, 6 of which should be sequential (e.g., ART 215 and 216; 113 and 201; 227 and 327). These 12 hours should be 200-, 300-, or 400-level courses. (ART 113 may count toward the 12 elective hours). Students majoring in Art History may use only 6 hours of courses used for the major toward a minor in Studio Art.

II.    Minor in three-dimensional media—26 hours, including: ART 110, 111; ARTH 201, 202; 12 elective studio hours, 6 of which should be sequential (e.g., ART 230 and 231; 240 and 340). Students majoring in Art History may use only 6 hours of courses used for the major toward a minor in Studio Art.

Add:              On pg. 69, in place of heading deleted entry:

I.   Minor in two-dimensional media—26 hours, including: ART 110, 111; ARTH 201, 202; 12 elective studio hours. Six of the 12 studio hours must be sequential and must be at the 300-400 level. Students majoring in Art History may use only 8 hours of courses used for the major toward a minor in Studio Art.

II. Minor in three-dimensional media—26 hours, including: ART 110, 111; ARTH 201, 202; 12 elective studio hours. Six of the 12 studio hours must be sequential and must be at the 300-400 level. Students majoring in Art History may use only 8 hours of courses used for the major toward a minor in Studio Art.

Impact:

We do not anticipate a need for further resources.  This may have a positive resource implication since it might reduce the need for faculty to offer 2-hour special topics courses to help students meet the minimum hour requirement for the minor.

Rationale:

ART 110 and 111, as well as ARTH 201 and 202, are required for all students seeking a major or minor in Art.  Currently, students pursuing the Art History concentration may count only 6 hours used for the major (essentially the hours from ARTH 201 and 202) toward the requirements for the studio art minor. Although a student may have completed 14 of the required 26 hours the minor, only 6 are applicable, meaning 20 additional hours must be taken.  By changing the allowable double-counted hours from 6 to 8, the hours used for both major and minor will now come from ART 110 and 111. This means students with an Art History concentration who want to minor in studio art will now be required to complete 18 dedicated hours instead of 20.  With the exception of ART 110 and 111, all ART courses are 3 hours. If a student is required to complete a minimum of 20 additional hours of ART, they will either have to take 7 courses totaling 21 hours, or an instructor will need to offer a 2-hour special topics studio art course for the student. Increasing the double-counted hours to 8 will make it much easier for students to fulfill this requirement, and will not require faculty to offer special topics courses for these students. In addition, it will make the total hours for the studio art minor more like the requirements for the Art History minor and will allow more Art History students to complete the studio art minor.
