APC Document 21:                          Change titles and descriptions for EDUC 317, 322, 325, 340, 344, 388
 

Effective Date: Fall 2011

 

 

1.  Delete:           On page 124, the entry for EDUC 317:

 

                317         Teaching Language and Literature, K–9 (3)

Teaching the language arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in elementary school and middle school with emphasis on children’s language development including direct skills instruction, children’s literature, and integrated approaches to literacy teaching and assessment. Prerequisites: EDUC 210, 211. Fall and Spring.

 

 

        Add:              On page 124, in place of deleted entry:

 

                317         Language Arts in the Contemporary Classroom, K-6 (3)

Teaching the language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, visually representing) in the K-6 classroom. Emphasis is on children’s development in the area of multimodal literacy, including direct skills instruction, children’s literature, integrated approaches to literacy teaching and assessment, and responsive teaching frameworks and techniques. Field experience required. Prerequisites: EDUC 210, 211. Fall and Spring.

388         Literacy Processes and Practices Across the Curriculum, K-6 (4 hours)

Designed to develop competencies in teaching reading across the curriculum. Covers the reading process, approaches, linguistics, word recognition, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and current trends. Field experiences required. To be taken as part of the Professional Year prior to the Student Teaching Semester. Prerequisites: EDUC 210, 211, 317, 326; formal admission to the department. Fall and Spring.

 

 

Impact: 

EDUC 325 will now have a pre- or co-requisite, but this change will have minimal impact as they can take EDUC 210 and 211 as early as their second semester sophomore year. Otherwise, these changes have no impact on the department; they simply reflect updated titles and course descriptions.

 

Rationale:

Brings course numbers, titles, and hours into alignment with the newly revised K-6 program.
