Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 15:                                                         Changes to required courses for CSCI major and minor

Effective Date:   Fall 2011

1.    Delete:         On page 105, under Concentration in Computer Systems, items I and II:

                          I.      Required courses in the major—41 hours, including: CSCI 107, 201, 202, 255, 320, 331, 333, 343, 346, 431, 462; and 9 additional hours in CSCI at the 300 level or above.

II.      Required courses outside the major—23 hours: MATH 191, 192, 251; PHYS 221, and either 222 or 231; STAT 225.

Add:              On page 105, in place of deleted entry:

                          I.      Required courses in the major—41 hours, including: CSCI 107, either 181 or 182, 202, 255, 320, 331, 333, 343, 346, 431, 462; and 9 additional hours in CSCI at the 300 level or above.

II.      Required courses outside the major—23 hours: MATH 191, 192, either 251 or 280; PHYS 221, and either 222 or 231; STAT 185 or 225.

Impact:

None

Rationale:

CSCI 201 is being replaced by either 181 or 182. Adding MATH 280 as an alternative to MATH 251 allows our majors to take a similar, but more advanced course, in Mathematics.  Since MATH 280 is a required course in all concentrations of  the MATH major, the change will help students pursuing double majors in CSCI and MATH. Adding STAT 185 as an alternative to STAT 225 follows a recommendation from the Chair of the Mathematics department that Computer Science majors would be equally served by either course.  This change also gives the two concentrations of our major the same requirement in Statistics.

II.      Required courses outside the major—20 hours: ACCT 215; ECON 306; MATH 191, 251; MGMT 220; STAT 185 or 225
