APC Document 58: Change course descriptions for SPAN 481, 482 and 495

Effective Date: Fall 2010

1. Delete: On page 264, the description for SPAN 481:

Topics from all the Americas in prose, poetry and drama from Modernism through the

present. Prerequisite: SPAN 320. See department chair.

Add: On page 264, in place of deleted entry:

Topics from all the Americas in prose, poetry and drama from Modernism through the

present. May be repeated as topics vary for a total of six hours credit. Prerequisite: SPAN 310, permission of department chair if repeating for credit. See department chair.

2. Delete: On page 264, the description for SPAN 482:

A survey of the development of Spanish literature and civilization in the context of

historical developments from the 19th century to the present, as seen through the artistic and intellectual achievements, religious, social and political institutions, customs and traditions reflected in literary texts. Prerequisites: SPAN 310, 320. Every year.

Impact Statement:

Allowing students to take the courses more than once will create minimal impact on course offerings and staffing. Several of the courses that have been offered in the past as special topics will now be offered as 481, 482 or 495. Although few students repeat these courses, we would like to give those with a special interest the opportunity to earn additional credit without having to create a special topics course for them. The prerequisites have been changed to reflect the deletion of SPAN 320 from the curriculum.

Rationale:

Students are provided with additional opportunities to explore a greater number of topics because the content of the course varies.
