APC Document 56: Delete SPAN 320: Composition and Introduction to Literature II

from Spanish curriculum

Effective Date: Fall 2010

1. Delete: On page 264, the title for SPAN 310, 320:

310, 320 Composition and Introduction to Literature I, II (3, 3)

Add: On page 264, in place of deleted entry:

310 Composition and Introduction to Literature (3)

Impact Statement:

As a result of removing SPAN 320 (Composition and Introduction to Literature II) and replacing it with SPAN 440 (Advanced Spanish Language and Composition), the students will be exposed to formal grammar instruction in Spanish during an additional semester. There will be no net change in the number of required hours for the major, and there will be no impact on staff.

Rationale:

The objective of replacing SPAN 320 (Composition and Introduction to Literature II) with SPAN 440 (Advanced Spanish Language and Composition) is to expose the students to additional grammar instruction in order to improve their knowledge of the language and to acquire more fluency with advanced structures. This substitution has been initiated with the goal of diversifying our curriculum and condensing exposure to literature into fewer courses while giving the students the opportunity to focus on the language itself at a more advanced level.
