Impact Statement:

No additional resources will be required. The Industrial and Engineering Management major is being eliminated and a Management concentration in Operations Management is being proposed. Four new courses will be required for that concentration and will be phased into the departmental offerings. Four departmental courses required for the Industrial and Engineering Management major will be phased out. Courses being phased in and equivalent courses being phased out will not be offered in the same semester; appropriate substitutions in students’ requirements will be made during the phase-in/phase-out period.

Rationale:

In the drive to make the universities in the System more “lean”, programs that were deemed to have low productivity underwent a more rigid review than the regular reviews they have experienced. The Industrial and Engineering Management major has been highly successful in the satisfaction of its majors with their education, in the satisfaction of the business community that has hired its majors, in the level of opportunity afforded its graduates, and in its graduates’ appreciation of the University. However, the numbers that are needed to make it safe from biennial review have not been there. In the current review, a decision was made, with the approval of the Provost, to remove the Industrial and Engineering Management major and offer a new concentration (Operations Management) for those students interested in this area of management.

MGMT 352 (Applied Research) is being removed from the Management core and added to the Business Management and Administration concentration and the Marketing concentration. Research is being incorporated into the Operations Management concentration in the upper-level classes and under the personal guidance of the instructor. Thus, students in all three concentrations will have exposure to research.

Since all Management majors must complete either MGMT 482, 489, or 499, moving this requirement from each concentration to the core seemed appropriate.
