Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 49:                                          Addition of CHEM 132 as a pre- or corequisite for BIOL 115

Effective Date: Fall 2010

1.  Add :                On page 83, in the course description for BIOL 115, before “Fall.”:

                                                Pre- or corequisite: CHEM 132.

Impact Statement:

There will be little impact on the resources and staffing of the biology department due to this change. The addition of CHEM 132 as a pre- or co-requisite is expected to result in a student population that is better prepared to understand chemical concepts introduced in this first class in the biology major. Fewer students will enroll in the courses strictly as a way to satisfy the ILS lab science requirement. Since both Biology and Environmental Studies majors are required to complete CHEM 132, these students won’t be impacted.

Rationale:

Close to 100 students register for BIOL 115 each fall. The majority of these students plan to major in biology or a related science. However, there are some students who register for this course strictly as a means of satisfying the ILS laboratory science requirement. We would like students to realize this course is intended for majors in Biology and other natural sciences, and is less appropriate to use to satisfy the ILS requirement. By adding the pre-or corequisite, students who do not plan to major in biology, environmental studies, or chemistry are less likely to enroll in BIOL 115. They should choose BIOL 123 and 124 or other ILS natural science courses with labs instead.
