Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 28:                               Change title and description for ARTH 485: Senior Research

Seminar to ARTH 485: Senior Research Seminar II

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.     Delete:        On pg. 73, under Additional Art History Offerings

                    485     Senior Research Seminar (3)

In this capstone course for Art History, students will complete a research project on a departmentally-approved topic and give a formal presentation of their work at an approved symposium, conference, or event.  An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.  Fall and Spring.

2.     Add:           On pg. 73, in place of deleted entry:

485     Senior Research Seminar II (3)

The second of two courses in the senior capstone, students conduct research in art history for their capstone project.  Students will complete a scholarly paper on a departmentally-approved topic chosen in ARTH 484 and give a formal presentation of their work at an approved symposium, conference, or event.  Prerequisite: Completion of ARTH 484 with a grade of C or higher. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

This change coincides with the addition of a new course ARTH 484, Senior Research Seminar I.

Rationale:

This existing course will be changed from encapsulating the entire capstone process to focus on the completion of the capstone paper.  Since one semester was not adequate time to search for a topic, investigate thoroughly the subject, and complete the final paper; this sequence of seminar capstone courses would aid more students in achieving their goals and potentially graduate as University Research Scholar.
