Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 27:                               Add new course, ARTH 484: Senior Research Seminar I

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.         Add:     On pg. 73, under Additional Art History Offerings:

                 484        Senior Research Seminar I (3)

The first of two courses in the senior capstone, this seminar provides students with an opportunity to develop a unique scholarly topic which will later become the focus of the capstone project. Offering an overview of alternative approaches to conducting research in art history, this course focuses on practical issues related to developing a proposal for in-depth research.  Project proposals must be approved by the project advisor and the instructor of ARTH 484.  Prerequisite: Eighteen hours in Art History. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

Adding this course to the existing curriculum of Art History within the Art Department will allow students to complete a thorough investigation of their chosen topic for the capstone paper.   Department course offerings are being restructured to shift students to under-enrolled courses.  No additional resources will be necessary.

Rationale:

This proposed course will introduce students to areas of research and allow them to investigate a research topic in-depth in preparation for their second capstone course, ARTH 485.  The existing one semester capstone course did not allow students enough time to search for a topic, investigate thoroughly the subject, and complete the final paper.  This sequence of seminar capstone courses would aid more students in achieving their goals and potentially graduate as University Research Scholar.
