Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 16:                         Revise requirements for Environmental Studies minor

Effective Date: Fall 2010

1.      Delete: On page 135, paragraph under Minor in Environmental Studies

19 hours in Environmental Studies consisting of ENVR 130, 241, 330; two courses from

ENVR 234, 282, 334 or ECON 337 (prerequisite ECON 102); one advanced ENVR elective.

One-half of the hours required for a minor must be completed at UNC Asheville. All minors

require that a minimum of 6 semester hours of 300-400 level courses be completed at UNC

Asheville.

Add:           On page 135, in place of deleted entry:

At least 19 hours in Environmental Studies consisting of ENVR 130, 241; two courses from

ENVR 234, 282, 334 or ECON 337 (prerequisite ECON 102); two advanced ENVR

electives. One-half of the hours required for a minor must be completed at UNC Asheville.

All minors require that a minimum of 6 semester hours of 300-400 level courses be

completed at UNC Asheville.

Impact:

Minimal. Will free a few spaces in the Environmental Seminar course for majors.

Rationale:

Students pursuing a minor in Environmental Studies currently have the option of only one elective. Allowing student minors to take two Environmental Studies electives with associated concentrated content outweighs the benefits of taking one elective plus a capstone course intended as a summative course for majors.
