Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 73:                                           Change title and description for DAN 231;

Change description for DAN 235

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1. Delete:          On page 154, the title and prerequisite for DAN 231, Dance and Drumming:

                 Dance and Drumming (1)

Students learn the rhythmic structures that drive the dances presented in DAN 230. Students learn to play with the drum ensemble accompanying the class. Prerequisite: DAN 230; or permission of instructor. See program coordinator.

Add:           On page 154, in place of deleted entry,

African Drumming Techniques (1)

Students learn the rhythmic structures that drive the dances presented in DAN 230. Students learn to play with the drum ensemble accompanying the class. See department chair.

Impact:

No additional resources are required.

Rationale:

In traditional African dance, it is the drummers who call and control the progression of the dances, hence there is an intricate connection between drumming and the dance.  This class teaches students the drum patterns associated with specific parts of traditional dances but it is not a dance

class, it is strictly a drumming class. The present title confuses students who think they are registering for a dance class when, in fact, the skill set is only music. Changing the title will clarify the limits and focus of the course. The prerequisite is being removed because it isn't necessary for students to know the dance steps in order to perform the drumming techniques.

2.  Delete:         On page 154, the description for DAN 235, Jazz Dance II:

Building on the historical survey of vernacular dance in DAN 135, students will develop an understanding of and proficiency in the art of contemporary Jazz Dance as a concert dance form. Students will develop improved strength, flexibility and stamina as well as functional alignment as they become familiar with the classic Jazz postures, positions and vocabulary.  Students will conduct guided research in one aspect of history of Concert Jazz Dance. Prerequisite: DAN 135. Spring

Add:           On page 154, in place of the deleted entry:

Students will develop an understanding of and proficiency in the art of performing contemporary Jazz Dance as a concert form. This course focuses on the use of isolations and coordinations unique to concert Jazz Dance. Students will develop improved strength, flexibility and stamina as well as functional alignment as they become familiar with the classic Jazz postures, positions and vocabulary. Students will conduct and present research in one aspect of the history of concert Jazz Dance as part of this course. Prerequisite: DAN 135 is recommended but not required. Spring.

Impact:

None.

Rationale:

Description is being updated to better reflect course content. DAN 135 will now be recommended, but not required.
