Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 66:                   Require a Study Abroad experience for the INTS major;

                                                Remove foreign language as an option for fulfilling international experience requirement

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.  Delete:         On page 176, the final sentence in the descriptive statement:

In addition to classroom work, students must engage in participatory activities and are strongly urged to study abroad.

    Add:             On page 176, in place of deleted entry:

In addition to classroom work, students must engage in participatory activities and earn at least 6 credit hours from study abroad and/or experiential learning abroad.

2.  Delete: On page 176, under Requirements for Concentration in International Studies, in item II. B:

3.         6 hours of modern foreign language study at the 300‑level or above.

Impact:

Requiring study abroad or international experiential learning is expected to have minimal impact since most, if not all, students completing this concentration already participate in study abroad.

Rationale:

International studies majors need to have a significant international experience to enrich their classroom study of world affairs. The option of taking additional foreign language in place of an international experience was originally included because UNC Asheville had no designated funds to help students with financial need to meet the extra costs of study abroad.  As more affordable options for study abroad become available, it is reasonable to expect an international requirement can be met by our students.  It is also one of the director’s duties to raise money to fund scholarships to make the opportunity available to all.
