Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 43:                               Add new course, ARTH 485, Senior Research Seminar

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.   Add:           On pg. 80, under Additional Art History Offerings:

            485       Senior Research Seminar (3)

In this capstone course for Art History, students will complete a research project on a departmentally-approved topic and give a formal presentation of their work at an approved symposium, conference, or event. An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.  Fall and Spring.

Impact:

Adding this course to the existing curriculum of Art History within the Art Department strengthens the course offerings in art history. Taught in alternate semesters by full-time art history faculty, no additional resources will be necessary. It is consistent with the Art Department’s shift from comprehensive exams in favor of capstone research projects and will help students prepare for art-related professions and/or graduate school.

Rationale:

Students will be better prepared for graduation if they complete a Senior research project.  For example, the senior paper may be used as a writing sample for graduate school or employment application.  Students are required to present their research at an approved venue (e.g., the UNCA Symposia, NCUR, the Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium, or other departmental events or conferences).  Students will be encouraged to submit their papers for publication in a professional journal in order that they can be become eligible for Undergraduate Research Scholar status.
