                                                Add new course, BIOL 322, cross-listing it with ENVR 322;

                                                Add new course, BIOL 323, cross-listing it with ENVR 323;

Editorial changes as a result of the deletions and additions

Effective Date:  Fall 2009

1.  Delete:         On page 144, the entry for ENVR 443:

443       Tropical Ecosystems (3)

Study of the important organisms, habitats and ecosystems characteristic of the tropical world. Emphasis will be on management practices, rates of destruction and need for species/habitat conservation. Prerequisite: ENVR 130. Odd years Fall.

2.  Delete:         On page 144, the entry for ENVR 444:

444       Tropical Ecosystems Field Experience (1-4)

Field trip (one to three weeks) to study tropical organisms and ecosystems in Puerto Rico or another tropical country. Expenses paid by the students. Corequisite: ENVR 443. Winter break.

Impact:   None. The two courses are being replaced by other courses cross-listed in Biology and Environmental Studies.

Rationale:  New courses are being created to better reflect the expertise of the instructors.

3a.  Add:          On page 89, new course, BIOL 322:

                        322       Tropical Ecosystems (ENVR 322) (3)

Study of the important organisms, habitats, and ecosystems characteristic of the tropical world.  Emphasis will be on ecological and evolutionary theory, biodiversity, and need for species/habitat conservation. Prerequisite: BIOL 210 or 211, or ENVR 241. Odd years Fall.

3b.  Add:          On page 141, new course, ENVR 322:

                        322       Tropical Ecosystems (BIOL 322) (3)

Study of the important organisms, habitats, and ecosystems characteristic of the tropical world.  Emphasis will be on ecological and evolutionary theory, biodiversity, and need for species/habitat conservation. Prerequisite: BIOL 210 or 211, or ENVR 241. Odd years Fall.

4a.  Add:          On page 89, new course, BIOL 323:

323       Tropical Ecosystems Field Experience (ENVR 323) (2)

Field trip (two weeks) to study tropical organisms and ecosystems in Costa Rica

Expenses paid by participants. Corequisite: BIOL 322. Winter break following BIOL 322.

4b.  Add:          On page 141, new course, ENVR 323:

323       Tropical Ecosystems Field Experience (BIOL 323) (2)

Field trip (two weeks) to study tropical organisms and ecosystems in Costa Rica

Expenses paid by participants. Corequisite: BIOL 322. Winter break following BIOL 322.

Impact Statement:

The proposed changes will have a positive effect on teaching in both Biology and Environmental Studies by offering expertise in tropical biology to students in both departments. Cross-listing the courses will insure that upper level credit is earned by all students. Because these are new courses being taught by Drs. Clarke and Reynolds, one course every other year in their respective departments will need to be taught by other instructors. Both departments now have the personnel to handle that increased load.

Rationale:

Environmental Studies previously offered these courses under a different instructor. The new instructors have changed the descriptions somewhat to reflect their interests and expertise. The courses are changing from 400- to 300-level because the rigor is not considered to be at the senior level.

5.  Delete:         On page 87, under Concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology:

three courses from BIOL 321, 331-337,

Add:           On page 87, in place of deleted entry:

three courses from BIOL 322, 331-337

Impact: None.

Rationale:

BIOL 321 is being removed from the curriculum. BIOL 322, Tropical Ecosystems is an appropriate course to list in the concentration.

6.  Delete:         On page 87, under Concentration in General Biology:

                                    3.         BIOL 321, 331-337,

Add:           On page 87, in place of deleted entry:

3.         BIOL 322, 331-337,
