Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 29:                                                  Add new course, ECE 456, Mechatronics, and add it as an option for the major

Effective Date:  Fall 2009

1.  Add:            On page 136, a new course, ECE 456, Mechatronics:

456             Mechatronics (3)

The study of electro-mechanical systems controlled by microcomputer technology. The theory, design and construction of smart systems; closely coupled and fully integrated products and systems. The synergistic integration of mechanisms, materials, sensors, interfaces, actuators, microcomputers, controllers, and information technology. Prerequisite: ECE 301. Fall.

2.  Delete:         On page 133, in item I:

                                    E 101; ECE 109, 200, 209, 211, 212, 220, 301, 406, 455, 460;

            Add:     On page 133, in place of deleted entry:

                                    E 101; ECE 109, 200, 209, 211, 212, 220, 301, 406, 455; ECE 456 or 460;

Impact:

JEM (Joint Engineering with a Mechatronics concentration) majors may take this course instead of ECE 460. There will be little impact on the resources and staffing of the Engineering department at UNCA as a result of this change.

Rationale:

The addition of ECE 456 is recommended by NCSU Engineering which is responsible for the Engineering curriculum in the JEM program. ECE 456 is similar in content to ECE 460, an existing course in the Engineering curriculum. In the 2010 catalog, it is anticipated that ECE 456 will replace ECE 460 as a requirement in the JEM curriculum.
