Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 14: Change course
number, description, and credit hours of
ENVR 382, Environmental Geology;
Editorial
changes resulting from adding Environmental
Geology to core requirements for Environmental Studies
Effective Date: Fall 2009
1. Delete: On
page 143, the entry for ENVR 382:
382 Environmental
Geology (4)
Study of earth processes that affect humans and
ecosystems. Fundamentals of groundwater hydrology and mineral resources will be
emphasized; other topics will include rivers and flooding, volcanoes, gravity
processes and earthquakes. Laboratory will include field projects.
Prerequisite: ENVR 105. Odd years Fall.
Add: On page 141, renumbered course with new level
and credit hours:
282 Environmental Geology (3)
Human interactions with natural geological processes.
Topics to be covered include volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, mass movements,
water pollution, waste management, and radon gas. Field trips will be required.
Prerequisite: ENVR 130. Spring.
Impact:
ENVR
282 is being dropped from a 300-level to a 200-level course, the lab is being
eliminated, thereby reducing the credit hours, and the course will be included
as one of the required elective ("choose 2 of 4") courses for the
Environmental Studies core. Higher enrollments in this proposed Environmental
Geology course, which will now fulfill an Environmental Studies core
requirement for all majors, will take enrollment pressure away from Energy and
Society (ENVR 234), which in the past was taught three out of four semesters by
a former faculty member.
Rationale:
The
addition of Environmental Geology (ENVR 282) to the Environmental Studies core
courses will provide more variety and opportunity for students to be exposed to
an Earth Science course without having to major in Earth Science. Currently,
all Environmental Studies majors are required to take courses in Ecology and
Environmental Management and Policy as part of the degree core requirements:
Ecology & Field Biology (ENVR 241) and two of three others (Energy &
Society (ENVR 234), Environmental Policy (ENVR 334), and Environmental
Economics (ECON 337). The revised Environmental Geology (ENVR 282) will be
added to that list of required electives as a fourth option. The Hydrology
(ENVR 338) and Water Pollution (ENVR 362) courses are being revised to contain
hydrology topics that were previously covered in the old Environmental Geology
(ENVR 382).
2. Delete: On page
139, under Environmental Studies majors must fulfill the following
requirements:
I.
Required courses in the major—19–22 hours: ENVR 130, 241,
330, 490; and select two of three from: ECON 337 (prerequisite ECON 102); ENVR
234, 334.
Add: On page 139, in place of deleted entry:
I.
Required courses in the major—19–22 hours: ENVR 130, 241,
330, 490; and two
courses from: ENVR 234, 282, 334 or
ECON 337 (prerequisite ECON 102).
Impact:
Environmental Studies students will now have ENVR 282 as an
option for completing the core requirements in the major.
Rationale: Editorial to reflect curricular changes.
3. Delete: On
page 140, under Minor in Environmental Studies:
two
courses from ENVR 234, 334 or ECON 337;
