APC Document  20:                                          Change in Required Courses  for Applied Math

 Effective Date: Fall 2008

1.         Delete:  On p. 195, under Concentration in Applied Mathematics, item I:

                                       I.      Required courses in the major—38–39 hours, including: MATH 191, 192, 280, 291, 352, 365, 381, 394, 480; MATH 461 or 491; STAT 225 or 425; and an additional 6 hours in Mathematics or Statistics courses numbered above 300. These latter hours must include either: one course from MATH 366 or 395, or the sequence STAT 425-426.

Add:           On page 195, in place of deleted entry:

I.         Required courses in the major—38–39 hours, including: MATH 191, 192, 280, 291, 341, 365, 381, 394, 480, 491; STAT 225 or 425; and an additional 6 hours in Mathematics or Statistics at the 300-400 level.  These latter hours must include one course from MATH 352, 366, 395, 492, or STAT 426.

Impact:

There is no difference in the number of hours required for the Applied Math Concentration with this change. There will be a slight increase in the number of students taking MATH 341 and 491. MATH 492 may also see a slight increase in enrollment that will be offset by a slight decrease in the enrollment of MATH 352 since they will become part of a list of five courses from which students can choose. MATH 461 may see a decrease in the number of students taking it.

Rationale:

Students will learn the material expected of a student entering graduate school in applied mathematics by taking Numerical Analysis and Real Analysis.  Because we are restricting their choices in this way, we propose to broaden the list of courses they can take for their additional 6 hours for the major.
